2009.06.04_CAB_Minutes_Regular TOWN OF HIGHLAND BEACH MINUTES OF THE CULTURAL ADVISORY BOARD REGULAR MEETING Thursday, June 4, 2009 9:30 A.M. Members Present: Chair Emily Firtell, Board Member Sheila Kallman, Board Member George Kelvin, Board Member Myrna Resnick and Board Member Rene Yucht. Members Absent: Vice Chair Lois Feldman (Excused) and Board Member Elizabeth Eidelson (Unexcused). Also Attending: Deputy Town Clerk Valerie Oakes and members of the general public. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Firtell called the Regular Meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. Roll call was taken by Deputy Town Clerk Oakes and the Pledge of Allegiance followed. ADDITIONS, DELETIONS OR ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA: • Chair Firtell requested to remove items 7A and 7B from the agenda, and add the items to the next meeting. MOTION: Board Member Resnick moved to accept the agenda. Board Member Kelvin seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS AND REQUESTS: Board Member Kallman commented that her neighbor, Sherman Frank, a musician and the director of the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, recommended a flautist and a singer who is reminiscent to Frank Sinatra. PRESENTATIONS: None. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: MOTION: Board Member Kallman moved to approve the minutes of March 26, 2009. Board Member Resnick seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Cultural Board June 4.2009 Page 3 of 4 • C. 2009-2010 Calendar of Events Chair Firtell announced that the Town of Highland Beach's 60th anniversary was June 3, 2009. The Town was incorporated in 1949. Ms. Firtell suggested incorporating the anniversary with the Swing Jazz Concert. Chair Firtell will ask Mari Suarez, Library Director, if the room is available, or if they can coordinate an event in conjunction with the Library. Labor Day -Monday, September 7, 2009 No ideas presented. Art Teacher Reception -Move the reception from March to November 2010. Cultural Board June 4, 2009 Page 2 of 4 OLD BUSINESS: Chair Firtell publicly thanked Mr. Gustave Wander for his donation to the Cultural Advisory Board. A. Desk Calendar By general consensus, the Board decided that now is not the time for the fundraiser; even though, Judi Brodman had a great idea. Roll Call Vote: B. Fee Schedule None. Potential Artist/Concert Being that Vice Chair Lois Feldman was absent, Chair Firtell tabled this item until the next meeting. • D. Inventory of Banners In the Cultural Arts Room are the following banners: three (3) light up the holidays, two (2) local artist show, one (1) art instructor reception, and one (1) swing j azz. E. Update: Art Classes (photography) Board Member Resnick knows someone that may be interested in teaching a photography class. Chair Firtell mentioned the following types of classes being a good possibility to schedule: photography, art appreciation, and clay art jewelry. An event to consider is an antique road show event consisting of different types of jewelry, coins, books and porcelain. NEW BUSINESS: A. 2008-2009 Budget and Donations The item was tabled until the next regular meeting. B. 2009-2010 Proposed Budget This item was tabled until the next regular meeting. • Cultural Board June 4, 2009 Pase 4 of 4 Swing Jazz Concert -There was discussion about incorporating the 60th anniversary with the Swing Jazz Concert, but due to the timing, the idea may not work. Town of Highland Beach 60th Anniversary -Ask the Town Commission for ideas. Chair Firtell will have the calendar of events along with the expenses associated ready by the next meeting for a final vote. Board Member Resnick and Board Member Kallman will prepare a list of phone numbers for the art instructors. They are going to create a log consisting of the instructors' suggestions along with how many students are in each instructor's class.
