1974.05.21_TC_Minutes_SpecialMINUTES: SPECIAL MEETING OF THE TOWN COMMISSION - May 21, 1974
• Mayor Gilday called the special meeting to order at 9:15 A.M., and
he requested that the record show Commissioners Mumford, Joy and
Clark present and he advised that Vice Mayor Dent is not present.
To the members of the Commission, residents, and members of the
press in audience, he read the notice (copy attached, marked Attachment
"A"). He read the contents of a letter dated May 16, 1974 (from
Vice Mayor Dent addressed to Mayor Gilday) (see Attachment "B"),
in which Mr. Dent resigned from the office of Vice Mayor-Commissioner.
In response to an inquiry, Mayor Gilday advised the Commission that
the Vice Mayor has said his decision is irrevocable.
Commissioner Joy expressed his regrets and stated: Not much you can
say about this, as he has taken this course of action, and it is re-
grettable that he has done so. Apparently nothing can be done about
it, so I will move that the resignation be accepted. Commissioner
Mumford said she would second the motion.
Discussion then took place.
• Commissioner Joy inquired, since it was not stated, would the resignation
be effective immediately? Mayor Gilday advised that Mr. Dent had
informed him that he would not attend any further meetings.
tr
The Mayor then stated: I have worked closely with Vice Mayor Dent
for several years. Granted there have been times we have not agreed.
We were first together in the Highland BFach Civic League, this was
during the time that he was President of that organization and we
were busy in the litigation which was then going on. At that time,
the Civic League, the Town, and the Urbanek interest were embroiled
in such litigation, our interests were very much united. As a matter
of fact, I was perhaps mainly responsible for his having run for office
two years ago.
Mr. Dent worked very hard for this Town, he was devoted to its interests
as he saw them to be. I think that he built up a tremendous. amount
of expertise in zoning and especially in connection with the problems
which this Town has had with respect to zoning. He was instrumental
in the negotiations in the Urbanek suit and other important matters;
especially those relevant to zoning.
He has indicated to me that within limits of his health problems he
will continue to be available to serve the Town with respect to that
department.'/

it. We thank him for his devotion to the Town and its problems, and
hope the next :commissioner will be as dedicated and knowlegeable".
Mayor Gilday thanked Mr. Losee who expresses sentiments of all of
us, including the Commissioners.

response to the question, their voice vote was: Commissioners ,Toy,
Mumford, Clark and Mayor Gilday all voted--Aye, the record will show
four aye votes.

Mayor Gilday stated, Let the records show that the resignation was
accepted by unanimous vote of the Commissioners present today. He
further asked that a verbatim report of the minutes of this meeting,
up to this point, (including the remarks of Mr. Losee) to be trans-
mitted to Mr. Dent.

• meetings required for consideration and/or approval of matters which
he read into the record. The data is listed in the Notices for
meetings scheduled for May 24th and May 28th, and Attachment "C".
The meeting for Friday, May 28th was agreeable to all parties to begin
at 10:00 A.M. The tentative hour of 12:30 P.M., for the Tuesday,
May 28th meeting was revised to 10:00 A.M. in order not to preclude
Commissioner Mumford from attending the Palm Beach meeting at 3:00 P.M.
of the Area Planning Board.
