BEACHES ADVISORY BOARD
REGULAR MEETING
Tuesday March 9 2004 9:30 A.M.
Chair Lucy Miller called called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. In
attendance were Vice-Chair Matthew Berman, Evelyn Weiss, Martha
Pando, Betty Jane Hofstadter, Jean Ellis. Ruth Samuels was absent.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Upon MOTION by MRS. HOFSTADTER/MRS. WEISS, the minutes of the
February 10, 2004 meeting were unanimously approved.
NEW BUSINESS
The following items were discussed:
Chair Miller noted that Mrs . Ellis provided turtle maps of the Town,
divided into five (5) sections, which will be used to determine the
placement of trash containers. The members decided that one every
1/2 mile would be appropriate, having six (6) in total.
There was discussion as to when to place signs, how to secure them,
• and have them marked with the Town's logo . Before placing the cans,
the homeowners/associations would need to be asked permission to
place on their property. It was also suggested that a sign be place
at the cans warning of riptides.
The Board also discussed jurisdiction over the intracoastal
shoreline, noting that the Town has a beach vehicle, so why not a
small water craft to monitor the intracoastal. It was noted that
the County Beaches and Shores council. is under the EPA which
includes monitoring the intracoastal waterway. The members
suggested that this committee name be changed to "Beaches and Shores
Advisory Board" to also include the domain of the intracoastal.
This request will be included on a memorandum to the Town
Commission.
The Board will also ask the Town Commission if it is within the
domain of this board to contact rakers to ID themselves with name
and phone number, and abide by state law. If not, can they be
enforced by the Town police.
Upon MOTION by MRS. ELLIS/MRS. PANDO, the Board request that its
name be changed to "Beaches and Shores Advisory Board" in order to
include domain of intracoastal waterway for environmental protection
of vegetation, manatees and mangroves.
